Hope and change...

Hope and change is what the Obama campaign rode on but unfortunately here in Toledo we seem to keep things the same without any strained thought. Once again we have another offer for the docks across from downtown Toledo and from what I've read/heard in other blogs (GCJ) and the many callers on the radio - it looks like we might be turning this down as well and continue to think that the city should be in the business of running a business. This city can't resist an opportunity to keep us in the depths of blight. We will dick this around for weeks, the group interested will change their minds and we will soon see matching plywood panels (like the many buildings in downtown) covering the windows of the empty restaurants and like clock work we will have the same stupid questions from elected officials i.e. "What can we do to better this city?".

Hoping for a change in the politics here in Toledo but I pretty much know the answer to that one.

COSI is gone...

If some of you don't know what I mean by the title, the title is in regards to a Science Museum that had a bit of trouble the past few years. They had a levy for it this past election and it went down in defeat by a large number. I didn't get the opportunity to visit the museum but from what I heard from my friends and neighbors the place was nice to visit every once in awhile but not consistently.

Most of them said that the museum needed to bring some different exhibits for the kids rather then keeping the old ones running. I even expressed that the museum should incorporate Ohio's/Toledo's CSI Unit and have a section in the museum dedicated to forensic technology where they can have either students or parents come in and get an inside look at the steps and procedures taken by the unit. They could of had a weekend program running for about a month showing others how to grid a crime scene and collect valuable evidence that can potentially solve the case in hand.

The picture you see to the right corner is that of the building in which the Science Museum is located currently. I'm not sure if anyone is interested in the spot as of yet but it is a great location for a club/restaurant. Let's see what the city decides to do with it. The blue is the roof of the museum so you can see the size in which would be available to a new business.

Extra Security...

Seems that PayPal's security key isn't necessarily so secure. [A] user discovered a bug that makes the key useless in certain situations. By entering his valid PayPal login and password, answering a security question and entering ANY six-digit number, he can make a purchase. It is important to note that that PayPal and EBay have not been able to reproduce the error ...
The entry above was written by Dan Goodin in San Francisco. I haven't met anyone who has one of these but it seems like a good idea especially if you think that their is someone out there watching every move you make.

A different look at it...

When I watched this video I began to wonder how many restaurants here in Toledo throw away good food in order to make room for the next delivery? What Ruthy Woodring is and has been doing for quite some time now can only be seen as wonderful, not only is she helping those who aren't able gather their own food but she's doing her part to make sure these items don't end up in some landfill. I want to send a special thank you to her and her friends who take the time to make sure that food like this isn't wasted. Actually, if our city officials can talk to local businesses about their daily habit we might be able to decrease the hunger numbers by about 20 to 25 percent. When my wife and I participated in the annual Tent City in downtown Toledo I had the chance to sit down and talk to a gentleman that saw the annual event very uplifting and helpful to those who feel there is no hope for them. If you're a restaurant owner or a worker and you're reading this please take the added time to keep that extra food that you normally throw out and contact your local organization that provides food to the homeless and see if they can distribute that food to people that very same night.
To get more information on Tent City and donations please call 419.349.4969 or email them at hap@taaeh.com

Saving that buck for presents...

The one thing I love the most is the fact that I can save a lot of money buying the same products that most grocery stores have at a higher price. The video link below has an inside look on how you can save hundreds of dollars each month. The one thing that I know that we don't do is buy product that is ready to go, for example - precooked meats, sliced cheese sold in quarter pieces, prepared mashed potatoes etc. Well I am kind of guilty on that last one, I love to buy the mashed potatoes already mashed for me so that I can cut some time during prep work for dinner. With the cut down on foods that are ready to go you will easily find yourself saving lots at month's end. This post is up so that in case my brother happens to be checking me online he might see this and think twice about buying that easy meal that takes seconds to prep.

A continuous problem...

Although the video was done back in 2006 the contents are so true. Illegal immigration is and always was a problem. What we need to do and stick to it is seek those hiring illegals and place such a hefty fine that they will have definite trouble getting back on their feet. With that kind of penalty they'll think twice before breaking the law again in order to save a few bucks on employees and costs over all. We'll get this figured out sooner or later.

Boeing's bolts are short...

NEW YORK (Reuters)Boeing's chief executive pointed the finger at Alcoa and others for the lack of bolts that has delayed the first flight of its new 787 Dreamliner and threatens its delivery schedule.
The shortage of aluminum and titanium bolts — known as fasteners in the aerospace industry — has been publicly discussed by Boeing for six months or so, but the problem is still not completely solved, Boeing CEO Jim McNerney said at an investor presentation Tuesday
.
When the introduction of the Dreamliner was made a few months ago I was talking with my wife about the jobs and added work hours this bad boy is going to create. We jokingly said that even with the huge announcement made that the supplies for this baby would probably be short in supply. Well here we are a few down the road and now Boeing has to postpone their delivery date to who knows what. Well at least the jobs and workers will still be there waiting for these bolts to arrive.

Not so pleasant in Pleasantville...

- Jayson G. Adams
- James T. McCormick
- James A. Pressley
- Rafael Velez
- Maurice Callaway
- Keith O. Reed
- Marcellus Jackson
- Jonathan Soto
- Mims Hackett Jr.
- Alfred E. Steele
- Samuel Rivera
What due the names above have in common? Give-up? They are all guilty of accepting corrupt payments from companies that offered insurance brokerage or roofing services to school districts and municipalities. This story will definitely be under my radar, I want to know the full story and what were they thinking when they did that. Actually the true question is how long have they been doing this and who else is involved that is not being mentioned and who has been doing this kind of swinging before them?
There's going to be a press conference at 3:30pm est in front of the federal courthouse in Trenton - and I thought the day was going to be boring HA.
Watch the VIDEO to hear the players of this disgrace.

Fallen Timbers...

No this is not a book title, the name on the title is that of a new complex that is being built in Maumee Ohio. I have yet to see it for myself but a friend of mine lives by there and he says that it is looking pretty nice. He has also mentioned that the new complex is built just across the street from one of the battle fields from the early wars. The image you see to the right is that of a monument that was erected in 1949. The outside mall will be a mirror image to the Levis Commons in Perrysburg Ohio. This complex is planned to open some time this year, it will probably open right around the late holidays - just in time for the rush of shoppers.

Only in Michigan...

Aside from being a huge Michigan Wolverine fan, I want to send a huge thumbs up to the owner of the South Lyon Watch and Jewelry in Michigan. I can only imagine the look on the customer's face when they take a look at the merchandise on display and then seeing a scorpion strolling around that very same item. The owner is quite right when he says that a snatch and grab will be something that will not happen any time soon. A very enlightening story about an added security to a local business especially with the increase of coverage regarding bank robberies.

Can I Borrow $225,000?

The title to this post sounds a bit extreme but if I were to live in that part of New York then that's what I would be asking for because there is no way that I would pay that much for a parking spot.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Parking spaces in New York cost as much as $225,000 and could soon be going higher still, putting the cost for the prime spots above the price tag of the typical U.S. home price.

Manhattan real estate agent Tom Postilio said there is a waiting list of seven or eight people hoping to pay $225,000 for one of five private parking spaces that has been approved in the basement of 246 West 17th Street, a 34-unit condo development scheduled for completion next January.

If the money that these few people have is burning a hole in their pockets the please by all means send me the money and I will be sure to save you a spot here in Toledo if you were to visit in the near future. You can send it under a title like "The Bettering of Roman Fund". I would gladly take the money and make necessary improvements and I will also make sure to send a special thank you letter and an update of what's going on.

Pull-A-Part Auto Parts..

I just read this today in one of the local papers;
Auto parts yard proposed
The Toledo Academy of Learning tried to buy the property in 2005 for its charter school, but the city wanted to keep the land zoned as general industrial.

"The fact that it was a charter school wasn't the issue," said Mr. Torres, who also serves as vice president of the Toledo Board of Education.

Kattie Bond, the acting director of the Department of Neighborhoods, is concerned about the view of an auto salvage yard from the Anthony Wayne Trail, a main thoroughfare into downtown Toledo.

She credits the Toledo Zoo with beautifying the area, and doesn't want to see its work interrupted by Pull-A-Part.

"Instead of a junkyard, we prefer it to be something clean, neat, and green," she said.

I was discussing this with my wife on our last visit to the zoo, we were discussing the possibility of expanding the zoo or even better yet bringing other like businesses to the area like COSI. I am going to agree with Kattie Bond in the fact that the area is being picked up and maintained in a very clean and lively manner, having a junkyard placed on one of Toledo's main arteries is a silly and better yet a "wrong" thing to do.
I know that this might bring in probably 20 jobs but it does not fit the area. Toledo has a few other locations that have junkyards already, they may not be the Rolls Royce of dealerships but what's wrong with a nice regular Olds dealership?

Please make yourself count and heard at a neighborhood meeting that will be held at 7 tonight regarding the fate of the property at 671 Spencer St.. The meeting will be at Southgate Church, 1217 Prouty Ave., between the Anthony Wayne Trail and Spencer Street.
